August in Orange County has always been busy. This year it's crowded in a way that changes how residents plan a Saturday. The county is hosting the final weeks of its biggest fair, a professional surf contest, two of the country's longest-running art festivals, a Broadway sit-down in Costa Mesa, and a full-scale Disney fan expo, most of it overlapping between August 1 and August 15.
If you already live here, the question isn't what to do. It's how to get across town without spending an hour on Newport Boulevard or the 55. The pattern below is what a local calendar looks like once you route around the chokepoints instead of into them.
The three places everyone else will be
The heavy events sit in three tight geographies. Knowing where they cluster is more useful than knowing what's on the bill.
- Costa Mesa fairgrounds. The OC Fair continues through mid-August at the OC Fair & Event Center with carnival rides, fair food, exhibits, shopping, entertainment and concerts, and it remains one of Orange County's biggest summer traditions. The 2026 theme is "Your Adventure Awaits!" A mile away at Segerstrom Hall, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera runs August 12 through 30, times vary. Fair traffic on Fair Drive and matinee traffic on Avenue of the Arts do not mix well.
- Huntington Beach Pier. The US Open of Surfing runs July 25 through August 2, featuring pro surfing, beach bars, food vendors, and live music, with the first weekend of August featuring the WSL Challenger Series finals, plus skate and BMX parks on the sand and a festival village. Pacific Coast Highway between Beach Boulevard and Goldenwest is the choke.
- Laguna Canyon. The Pageant of the Masters features faithful recreations of classical and contemporary works, with real people posing to look like the original pieces, accompanied by a professional narrator and a full pit orchestra. Next door, the Sawdust Festival features over 200 local Laguna Beach artists showcasing glassblowing, jewelry, ceramics, and painting, with three stages of live music, and the Festival of Arts hosts 140 juried artists with August "Concerts on the Green" featuring live jazz or soft rock. Laguna Canyon Road backs up to Broadway most weekend nights.
Add Anaheim to the list on August 14 through 16, when D23 Expo 2026 brings exclusive Disney panels, shows, shopping, and fan experiences across the city. Every hotel between the Convention Center and Katella will be spoken for.
Where the weeknight calendar is actually strongest
The interesting move this month is treating Tuesday through Thursday as your primary going-out window. The weeknight roster is genuinely deep, and none of it competes for the same roads as the marquee events.
The Fullerton Night Market transforms the downtown plaza into a festival every Thursday night, with a beer garden, hot food vendors, and a full concert on the main stage. It's the social hub of North Orange County. South county has its own quieter draw: Sharks After Dark at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point features shark feedings, interactive exhibits, cocktails, and live music, an adult-leaning evening at a venue most residents last visited on a school field trip.
If your calendar tolerates a mid-week concert, Dueling Pianos with Tom Bagley and Adam Eros plays The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Wednesday, August 12 at 7 p.m., tickets required. The Coach House parking lot on a Wednesday is a different experience from Laguna on a Saturday.
Newport residents have a standing weekly option that most of the county doesn't know about: Sow & Grow Fridays at Newport Bay Conservancy runs 9 a.m. to noon every Friday, helping grow native plants for restoration projects around the Upper Newport Bay through seed collection, transplanting, pruning, and composting. It's the kind of morning that resets a workweek.
A routing table for the first two weekends
The point of this table isn't to send you to the quieter pick. It's to name what you're giving up if you commit to the set piece and what you're gaining if you don't.

The pattern the table exposes is that every major coastal event has a credible North County or inland substitute happening the same evening. Fullerton, Santa Ana, and Anaheim are running a parallel cultural calendar that most coastal residents never touch in the summer.
The second half of August belongs to the neighborhood festivals
Once the fair closes and Phantom settles into its run, the calendar shifts toward smaller, community-scale events that feel like the county's actual voice.
Sea Country Festival 2026 in Laguna Niguel runs August 21 through 23 on Aliso Creek Road, with rides, games, food trucks, live music, and a beer and wine garden. It's one of Laguna Niguel's biggest community events of the year. The following weekend, a Snake River Farms and Nickel & Nickel Wine Dinner in Laguna Beach on August 28 features a four-course pairing.
A more useful entry, if you have a broken lamp or a wobbly chair sitting in the garage: Repair Café OC at the Norman P. Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo on August 16, 1 to 5 p.m., where volunteers help fix broken lamps, wobbly chairs, and busted gadgets at no cost. This is the kind of civic detail that only shows up on locally maintained event lists.
Labor Day weekend closes the month coastal again. Tunes at the Dunes at Newport Dunes features live music, food trucks, and beachfront fun in Newport Beach, and the following weekend brings the WSL back for the Lexus Trestles Pro in San Clemente during the WSL Championship Tour at Lower Trestles.
The food openings worth building a Saturday around
August is also the month several long-anticipated food arrivals become real. Two of them justify a targeted trip.
New York City's Levain Bakery will open in Newport Beach at Fashion Island. The New York Times once described their bakes as "what may possibly be the largest, most divine chocolate chip cookies in Manhattan." Pairing a Levain stop with Newport Beach Art Week through August 15 is the tightest single-parking-lot afternoon on offer this month.
Further inland, CHAGEE has opened a new location at The Outlets at Orange at 20 City Boulevard West, Suite 916, near Entry 7 at Dave & Buster's, its 11th California location in just over a year since the company entered the U.S. market. And for the dumpling faithful, Din Tai Fung is expanding to two new Orange County cities this year, opening at Irvine Spectrum Center and Brea Mall, in addition to its existing Downtown Disney and South Coast Plaza locations.
The single evening worth clearing the calendar for
If you only rearrange one weekend this month, make it a Thursday. The Native Plant and Wildflower Hike offers a guided walk through Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, and pairing it with a canyon dinner before the Pageant crowd loads in around 7 p.m. gives you the two best things Laguna does, without the parking lot.
